Worked out with the same factors the converter above uses.
Volume carries a trap that ruins recipes daily: US and British imperial measures share names without sharing sizes. A US pint is 473 ml; an imperial pint is 568 ml, almost 20% more. The US gallon is 3.785 litres and the imperial one 4.546. If a translated recipe does not say where it came from, that difference shows.
Curiously, with fluid ounces the difference runs the other way and is small: the US one is 29.57 ml and the imperial one 28.41 ml. So the imperial pint is bigger while its ounce is smaller, because the imperial pint divides into 20 ounces and the US pint into 16. That is why it pays to convert the whole measure rather than adding up ounces.
For cooking, the measures that matter are the cup (236.6 ml in the US), the tablespoon (14.79 ml) and the teaspoon (4.93 ml), with the convenient relationship that a tablespoon is three teaspoons and a cup is 16 tablespoons. In baking, where grams matter, weighing beats measuring volume.

Frequently asked questions
How many litres are in a gallon?
Depends which: the US gallon is 3.785 litres and the imperial gallon 4.546 litres. That is a 20% difference, so it matters which one you mean.
How many millilitres in a cup?
The US cup is 236.6 ml. Careful: some countries use a “metric cup” of a round 250 ml, which is not the same thing.
Why is the British pint bigger than the American one?
Because the UK redefined its measures in 1824 around the imperial gallon, while the United States kept the older English measures. They have shared a name and differed in size ever since.
