Area derives from length, so its factors are exact too: if an inch is exactly 25.4 mm, a square inch is exactly 6.4516 cm². What catches people out is how much the factor grows once you square it: a metre is 3.28 feet, but a square metre is 10.76 square feet. Doubling the side quadruples the area, and that throws off mental estimates.
Two units rule on land. The hectare is 10,000 m², a square 100 by 100 metres, and it is what continental Europe uses throughout. The acre is 4,046.86 m², a number that looks arbitrary because it is: it descends from the area a team of oxen could plough in a day. A hectare is about 2.47 acres.
In housing, the square foot dominates American listings and the square metre European ones. A 1,000-square-foot flat is 92.9 m²: if you have ever looked at New York rentals and thought the places sounded enormous, this is why.

10.7639 square feet. And the other way, a square foot is 0.092903 m². Note that it is not 3.28 but its square.
How many square metres are in a hectare?
Exactly 10,000 m²: a square 100 by 100 metres. An acre is 4,046.86 m², so a hectare is 2.47 acres.
Why isn't the area factor the same as the length factor?
Because it has to be squared. If the side is multiplied by 3.28, the area is multiplied by 3.28², which is 10.76. It is the commonest arithmetic slip when converting plans.
